How did this outspoken vegetarian get those gorgeous arms in less than six months?

Let Shari tell you in her own words:

I started at the IC with Bootcamp Express. Then I signed up for another. Then I quit the YMCA altogether so that I could keep going to the IC. Now, I take 3 core classes/week and get tortured, I mean, train with Steve once/week for a half an hour. I also attempt to run 3 – 4 times/week, although it’s often hard to find the time to do even that. And when I don’t run, I burn calories by beating myself up for not running. Before I embarked on my refined-carb free experiment, I thought I ate pretty well.

My typical day was:

Breakfast: Kashi Go Lean cereal with fruit, skim milk and protein powder, green tea
Snack: apple, 1 slice of low fat cheese, a small handful of almonds
Lunch: baked tofu, steamed greens, 2 Ryvita crackers
Snack: cottage cheese, green tea
Dinner: Lentil soup, sour dough baguette, cheddar cheese, steamed greens, spinach salad, ½ glass wine
Snack: piece of fruit and a bit of chocolate

Sprinkled in there were little tastes of whatever I was preparing for my kid – a bite of pizza, a handful of corn chips, a chocolate chip cookie. Then, Maya outlawed refined carbs.

Now a typical day looks like this:

Breakfast: ¾ cups of egg whites scrambled with spinach and garlic
Snack: handful almonds, apple
Lunch: Seitan, steamed greens, apple, protein powder
Snack: baked tofu slices, green tea
Dinner: Salmon, steamed greens, spinach salad, clementines
Snack: apple with a little peanut butter, protein powder

No wine, no bread, no cereal, no snacking on my kids food. And no whining about it.

Here is Shari six months ago. The hard work appears to have paid off.

You rock Shari!

No Rest for the Pregnant One

Maya Pregnant C&J small

Maya performs the full clean & jerk while carrying Baby K. in the pooch. Thank goodness for that Breema treatment this afternoon which finally relieved her sciatica pain.

Starting from the deadlift position, Maya hits the double knee bend (camera couldn’t catch it) and jumps into the triple extension. She then catches the barbell in a full front squat (with elbows pretty high considering her new center of gravity), stands up in the racked position, and dip/drives the load overhead ultimately landing in the split jerk position.

I knew I couldn’t keep her out of the weight room for long.

Crowded House

Crowded House

A typical evening Core class is often crowded, but full of energy, intensity, and WONDERFUL PEOPLE. Ruth (in yellow) is the epitome of what our community represents. A student and softball player at Berkeley High, she’s always positive, hard-working, and fun at heart!

Heidy and Crew

It’s always a treat to have Ice Chamber classics in the house too. Heidy Casanola (in green) has been representing the IC for over 2 years! In addition to her athletic attributes, she is also well known for her humble and sweet nature, salsa and merengue moves, and her unwavering devotion to her family.

IC Women

Mysteriously, six IC female powerhouses showed up in matching uniform this morning.

Is it time to publish that calendar?

(Thank YOU Tsan for capturing this timeless moment on your cellphone camera!)

Teach Em’ Young

Ivy One Arm Row

There’s no reason to wait until adulthood to learn the fundamentals of weightlifting. Teach your kids proper lifting mechanics by using a light load (or just their own bodyweight). For young children, neuromuscular adaptation is the goal, not hypertrophy.

Young Ivy is using a 3lb. dumbbell to demonstrate the one arm row. She is leaning on a mini parallel bar to form a base of support on her left side and activating her right latissimus dorsi muscle to initiate the right arm pull. Ivy keeps her spine straight while pulling her right arm close to the body. Notice that her right knee is locked to create core and lateral stability. She does not round her back nor drop her head down.

Kids – they learn so fast.

El Cerrito’s favorite Fire Captain, Rune Hoyer-Nielsen was in the house.

medballdrill

The over-under medicine ball drill sure was a crowd pleaser, despite the “hey, that’s not the ball!” feedback from some members.

Clean the Super Band

Dave Super Band Cleans

The clean is a functional movement that allows one to lift a heavy object (or pull a high level of resistance) from below the hips to shoulder level. The clean is the preferred method of lifting when the load is heavier than what the arms (biceps) can curl.

The Super Band Clean is a simple yet devastating exercise. All you need is a looped heavy gauge resistance band and a lot of heart. When performed properly, and with at least 20 consecutive repetitions, you can expect to feel effects similar to that of sprinting 200 meters. Excellent technique is critical, unless you want to throw out your back. Needless to say, do not try this without technical supervision.

Dave (BJJ Blackbelt – Pan American Gold Medalist) is using a sport specific variation of the Super Band Clean. Starting from a semi-squat position, Dave clasps his hands together around the resistance band to form a wrestler’s body lock position. While extending his hips and exploding backwards, he throws his arms from belly to chest level, simulating a suplex.

Talk to Steve if you want to give this one a shot.
