Etta DVD

Little Ms. Etta has been a regular at the Ice Chamber since her mommy (Shari the Great) started training here last summer. Etta often keeps herself busy by watching her mommy train hard and by taking a break to sing along her favorite DVD: Free to Be… You and Me, a 70’s classic featuring Marlo Thomas, Harry Belafonte, and Alan Alda. Like Shari, Little Ms. Etta has been working on her running and sprinting skills while reciting the entire script by memory in case the producers remake the series and need a fresh face to play Princess Atalanta. Hats off to Little Ms. Etta for her progressive and inspirational interest in fitness and children’s entertainment.

Friday’s Soul Train Line

Don Cornelius would’ve been proud. Funky, spunky, but never junky, this crew has more life than the Energizer Bunny.
(Yes, I know… hey, at least my MC/DJ skills are still intact. Why do you think the turntables are still in the office?)

Group Lunges

Group Lunges 2

As the sun rises over the horizon, the 7 a.m. bootcampers begin their steady march/lunge towards athletic perfection. Undaunted by the three long rounds of push-press lunges and the fact that the stop sign seems to be getting farther away with every step, they soldier on. The early morning light shines on their faces, and they greet the dawning day with courage and fortitude. Just one look at their noble expressions makes one wonder what inspirational thoughts are running through their heads right now…

(Perhaps “What on earth possessed me to pick up these dumbbells? It looked like an easy workout! Next time I’m definitely going lighter. Oh curse you, Ice Chamber!”)

Group Class

This picture is one of our favorites because every person featured here is completely focused on their workout despite the packed house. There is no room for gossip, jealousy, or fear when we concentrate on our own athletic development while preserving personal integrity.

What do you do to stay focused?

Chris Barbell Row Small

Friends, Romans, countrymen… Christina takes her workout to the next level by reenacting a scene from Gladiator. With muscles rippling and dust swirling, it’s all about “strength and honor.” If you look closely, you can see a scowling Joaquin Phoenix just behind the punching bag. Will she triumph in the Colisseum and avenge Marcus Aurelius’ death? I think she’s got an even better chance than Russell Crowe did.

So, what movie inspires your workout?

The IC’s Top 10

1000meter row

Here are the Top 10 Signs You Know You’re at the Ice Chamber:

(Courtesy of Douglas Reeves)

#10: You realize you may be submissive when you catch yourself saying, “More burpees, please.”

#9: The one time you forget to wipe your mat down, Maya looks at you and says, “That’s jacked up.”

#8: “You mean that last circuit was only the warm up?”

#7: You ask Steve to demonstrate a pushup so you have more time to rest.

#6: When someone asks if you’re sore from last night’s workout, you realize you’ve been sore since March 1st of last year.

#5: During rowing someone puts a blue bucket next to you.

#4: After Steve carefully explains the whole workout you ask, “What are we supposed to do?”

#3: You look at Steve and say, “I think I’m going to throw up” and he says, “good that’s 200 calories.”

#2: “Hey this jump rope is broken; it keeps getting stuck on my feet.”

…and the #1 sign you know you’re at the Ice Chamber:

During stretching you look around and think, “I never knew she had a tattoo there.”

Swan Song

Thursday, March 8th, 2007

Mariana

Bootcampers do musicals. Core class folks do ballets. Here’s Mariana and Eric rehearsing a scene from an upcoming production of “Swan Lake”. Of course, we do it Chamber-style, so the poetic dying swan scene involves partner assisted glute-ham raises, where the prince holds the swan queen’s feet while she free-falls into a bent-arm push-up position, and then uses her hamstrings and glutes to immediately spring right back to life. Over and over.

Tsan, Dan & Little Mo

Tsan and Daniel Abrahamson (and little Mo-Mo) are avid Telemark skiers. With the help of the Ice Chamber, Tsan and Dan both qualified for the NASTAR National Race finals this year which will be held at the end of March in Steamboat Springs. While skiing in Breckenridge, Tsan and Dan both raced the course on their Telemark skis as a lark. Dan earned a platinum in the local, finishing a full two seconds before the next fastest finisher (not only beating the Telemarkers, but all ALPINE skiers, too), and Tsan earned a gold medal! Last week, they were informed that their times placed them among the top three finishers nationally, which qualified them for the finals. Last year at this time (pre-IC), they both would have had to rest halfway down.
