Slow and Steady

mgk2

Okay guys and gals… it’s almost been a month since our son was born. In honor of this special occasion, I’m sharing my postpartum comeback story with you all. I never anticipated how much weight I would gain while growing a 9lb. boy for ten months. I planned on being one of those girls we all see on You Tube and running laps during my last trimester, but in reality all I could do was walk in straight lines… and even that was difficult. Now that I’ve made it to the other side and survived major abdominal surgery, I am deeply humbled by the challenge ahead of me. Everything from a basic push-up to a simple free squat feels hard right now. As you can see from the photo, I have to exercise with baby in tow, but I figure if kangaroos can do vertical jumps like this all day, I should be able to manage some light dumbbell training. Hopefully, you’ll hear about me graduating from the little green puppy weights to the big dogs very soon. My first goals are to tackle bodyweight exercises, end my eleven-month love affair with simple carbohydrates, and get a haircut.

look at those pjs! you will set a new trend in workout wear at the ol’ IC…
you look beautiful and determined (like you ever didn’t…)

  3. Shari says:

We’re all pulling for you Maya and know you will be back kicking our asses in no time. And I am definitely seeing a whole new class here – post-partum baby Bjorn workouts.

  4. Turbo says:

Love the picture. It shows the true Maya, a person so determined and driven. I can’t wait till you are back.

Mateo looks very comfortable and at ease. You working out does not even faze him.

  5. Dougie-Doug says:

It sooo good to see a pic of you. I feel like we have been deprived of your presence for too long. You look fantastic and strong — not to mention stylish.

  6. Jessica DiBiase says:

Go Maya you look terrific!! Can’t wait to have my training partner back by my side!

  7. Mani says:

YEAH Maya!! I second Dougie…its so good to see a photo of you. I love the go get ‘em expression on your face. And honestly Maya, I’m not just trying to flatter you here…but you look awesome for just having had a baby!! Come and visit soon!

  8. Kerri says:

You’re awesome Maya!!! I do love the pic of little mateo completely relaxed in his carrier, he’s a natural ice cube. Remember, you didn’t get this way overnight. even though you lost 9 lbs in one day. Slow and steady. Keep nurturing your little guy and yourself. We all miss you.

  9. Lan-Ling says:

Go Maya! BUT, it is only a month. The baby still needs some extra calories for all that milk (if you are breastfeeding). While, I pretty much assume you will astonish us with your fabulous body in a disgustingly short time after birth, we will not think less of you if you just want to relax for a bit and only concentrate on Mateo. We miss you though!

maya, you look great! i hope all is going well. the first time i hit a pilates class after lucas was born, the teacher said, “okay tighten your abs” and my first thought was, “my abs? what abs?”

  11. Tracy says:

Maya, You look amazing. Soon all the records on the IC scoreboard will have to be annotated with the initials BMC (Before Maya’s Comeback). As in “I had the top record for _______ before Maya’s comeback.” Rock on sister.

  12. Bear Bear says:

Maya you look beautiful. Can’t wait for fabulous return to the IC.

  13. Susan says:

Haircut! I remember the joy at being able to sing “Humpty Dumpty” enough times to entertain Rylee through the glass shower door to WASH my hair — and here you are at the weights. Don’t worry… it will all come back to you — and MORE than you’ve ever been able to dream.

Just know we all miss you – and love the treat of being able to see you!

  14. Jennifer says:

You look great, and Mateo at ease, too! If you need a good, affordable haircut, I can recommend Bing at B&J Salon on College in the Rockridge part of Oakland. She’s very nice, too.

Hi Maya, I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting you yet, as I just started boot camp this month. But I have to say that you have created a wonderful, supportive and challenging environment for so many people– me now included! Congratulations on your beautiful baby, and good luck with your post-partum goals. My son is 4, and it’s been (and continues to be) such an amazing journey in so many ways… Looking forward to meeting you.

  16. Baby Ks Momma says:

The haircut will take the first ten pounds off (I’m not kidding… I look like a Chia Pet) so the next 10 will require all the things I talk to you guys about: discipline, consistency, positive thinking, etc. Help me with that part! Make sure I visit the dark side–no mercy.  If you see me smiling while training, I’m definitely not working hard enough!

  17. Baby Ks Momma says:

If you hear me cursing four letter words, give me props!

  18. Therese says:

Maya, I remember being just where you are (though not as fit beforehand, obviously!)…post-first 10 lb baby, post c-section, and trying to get back to my formerly fit self. It didn’t seem to go fast enough, but truly, the weight will drop off as you nurse and as time passes. Just as you can’t control how much you gain during pregnancy (how many of us said, “Oh, we’ll just put on the recommended 25 lbs” and ended up weighing more than our partners?), you can’t totally control how fast it comes off. Be badass, as I hear you are, but also be a little gentle with yourself. The body does seem to hold on to some of the weight for a while, just to make sure Mateo won’t starve in a famine, but you’ll be back to badass before you know it. And I know it’s not just me–I see those tri muscles in your picture! I really look forward to meeting you.

  19. Baby Ks Momma says:

Btw, I miss all you wild people like crazy. Therese and Jen G., I can’t wait to meet you two!!!

  20. Renee says:

yeah know, looking at this picture again and again…..wow is Mateo going to be proud of his mama as he gets older and looks at this picture! Beautiful!

  21. Tsan says:

Is that all you got? I cannot believe you, woman.

Man, Maya, when I grow up I want to be you. You freakin’ rock. And I mean that (lawyers never lie)

  22. Steven says:

I came home yesterday and heard grunting in the office. I ran in to see if my wife was alright. What did I see? The picture doesn’t tell half the story. Let’s just say she was in there for 30 minutes. Solo training – zoned out. I looked at Mateo and saw him smiling at his mommy and thought to myself, “I’m so blessed to have M & M in my life.”

  23. Shari says:

Maya, I totally get that this is only a tiny bit about losing weight and a lot about needing to heal, get strong, move your body, bathe in endorphins and be who you are. You’re an inspiration to all of us, to your husband and to your little boy (he just can’t verbalize it yet).

  24. Paty says:

Maya and baby Mateo you two rock! we miss you and can’t wait to see you. the workouts aren’t the same w/out your energy, but they still kick butt! i like the kangaroo reference but please take it easy….superMAMA! hey, is that the baby thingy Catherine and I gave you? I heard the diaper bag was a hit at the Ped’s office…..yipppeeee! hasta pronto.

  25. Baby Ks Momma says:

Paty, thanks to you and Catherine, Mateo and I cruise in style!

  26. nancy says:

Wow! so great to SEE you!!! you look great, but you sound even greater…good outlook and good perspective. Can you even BELIEVE it when you look down into that bjorn and little Matteo is there?! can’t wait to meet him. ENjoy your time with him and just zoning out in baby bliss…you’ll be back at the chamber soon. you’re an inspiration!

  27. Eva says:

    Aloha Maya from Malibu!
I am officially full term today, due June 11th and have gained almost 40 lbs. with my pregnancy. It’s such a trip to see my body morph, acquire a sweet tooth I never knew existed and stare in awe at pre-preggo pics and appreciate for the first time how slim and sexy I was (and hope to be again soon)! I also run my own business like you and am supposed to be a role model for health and wellness..so I know EXACTLY how you feel right now. We’ve stepped into a whole new reaity my friend. And in a few months when our bodies have bounced back better than ever, the only part of us that will have stretched and grown to a XXL is our hearts and the new and wondrous love it now holds for our babies and our partners. God Bless You Beautiful Woman. You are now a true Goddess!!!
