Calvin Before and After

In recognition of fatherhood, we’re featuring one of the very best, Dr. Calvin Deng. Calvin is a father of two beautiful children (a baby and a toddler!) and an internal medicine physician, but these aren’t the only reasons we’re putting him in the spotlight. In less than six months, Calvin has lost over 25 pounds. Go Big Daddy!

Two other interesting facts about Calvin:

Calvin met his beautiful wife Sherry in 1997 when he went to undergrad and med school at Northwestern University in Chicago.

He finished his residency at Kaiser Oakland in 2002 coincidentally with another IC veteran, Dr. Lisa Chandler.

Deborah

Today is officially the last day of school for most of our children. We want to thank all of our IC teachers, including our 6am dynamo Deborah Place of Albany Middle School (pictured here exploding off the ground), for doing such a wonderful job with all of our kids!

Speaking of kids, name the parent(s) of all seven children from this morning’s 9am Bootcamp and claim your prize: your choice of IC apparel.

Weighted Bunnies

Jess is an avid climber and professional pottery maker, which should explain her incredible grip strength. As you can probably imagine, pull-ups are no’ thang for her, but lately she’s been playing with the big dogs when it comes to choosing weights and we couldn’t be happier for her. Check her out performing a Bootcamp favorite: the seated oblique twist (a.k.a bunnies) with a 30 lb. dumbbell. But, aside from enjoying some serious strength gains, Jess still likes to test her pulling skills on the balls o’ fun.

Have a Great Summer

Eva grew up attending a gym in Greece where kettlebell lifting was (and continues to be) a hugely popular tool for general physical preparedness. When she joined the Ice Chamber, she immediately said it reminded her of home.

Speaking of which, Eva’s leaving us for the summer to spend time there with her beautiful family. We’ll miss you Eva!

Ice Chamber members come out to support the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics today. Thank you to Officer Reece for helping to organize this event!

1. Bootcamper Susan B. (0600) gets to finally meet one of our most famous members, the one and only Catherine J. (IC’er for the past 5 years).

2. Berkeley and Emeryville Police Departments with IC members at the finish line.

3. University Avenue is shut down for the runners. Can you name three IC members in this pic?

4. Essbee, Maya, Kirk, and Mateo at Sproul Plaza.

5. Turbo and Sara excited about… the motorcycles?

The Jessica Zone

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

You are about to enter another dimension, a dimension of soreness not only in your major muscle groups but also in muscles you didn’t know you had, but that you feel acutely when you weakly attempt to return her high-five. A journey into a wondrous land where “five seconds” can stretch into a really long time, and you’ll find yourself doing exercises you never imagined possible. A place where you marvel that anyone could have that much energy, and you emerge knowing you got your workout and then some.

Next stop: the Jessica Zone.

How many of us can brag that we’ve been parallel to the floor while on the pull-up bar?

It’s easy to get distracted by Jessica’s beauty, intelligence, warmth, and amazing athleticism without knowing how hard she works to ensure that every member reach their full potential. As you can imagine, this is no small task! It’s no wonder she often gets compared to a superhero. Today for example, is Jessica’s birthday, but rather than taking a spa day away from work, she is devoted to her full schedule of rock-star clients (some of whom commute over an hour just to train with her).

Please join us in honoring Jessica’s 29th birthday by highlighting your favorite Wonder Woman moment to comments.

Piera leaves tonight for her big trip to the Gobi March in Western China…

“It would be more than great to hear from folks – words from home will carry me over the tough miles. It already promises to be an extra long and adventurous race. Giving it my best shot with what I got.” -Piera

Send your words of encouragement to the lovely Ms. Piera here.
