Our friend Marty Farrell paid a visit to the IC last weekend. For those who don’t know, Marty is one the most unassuming elite athletes in the world. He is the only male American born Master of Sport in Kettlebell Lifting and also, pound-for-pound, the strongest kettlebell lifter in the country. At 70kg, Marty regularly lifts high-rep sets at over 90% of his body weight (as demonstrated in this video). He competes against guys twice his size. The technical precision of his movements as well as his work capacity make his sets exciting to watch.

We were fortunate enough to witness his 3 minute Long Cycle test just 6 weeks after his second major surgery. To put everything into perspective, Marty could barely pick up the 12kg bells three months ago after his first surgery. He had plenty to say about Kettlebell lifting in regard to his rehab. He feels that people with knee issues can benefit a great deal because of the low impact aerobic nature of the sport. The complex movement patterns involved also provide stimuli for fine motor recruitment. Finally, the connective tissues of the major joints are progressively strengthened due to high-rep submaximal axial loading. Last week, Marty set his new personal record with two 32kg kettlebells.

We want to thank Marty for his awesome visit and look forward to his full recovery!

Jess always tries her best to make punishing workouts for everyone at the IC. It was time to return the favor.

Sara and Eva witness in silence as Jess fights to complete the 10th minute on the snatch.

Jake is undoubtedly one of our most loyal fans. He loves his IC tee and just like the kettlebell club, he enjoys coordinating his outfits (nice denim) with his wrist wraps.

Happy 5th Birthday to this stylin’ big boy!

College

We already miss our Berkeley / Albany athletes as they head back to college for their fall semester! Jo Jo (rowing) and Dakota (equestrian) are heading back to Brown while Artemis (softball) is starting her first semester at Wellesley.

These incredible young ladies push hard everyday (5x per week at the IC) and we wish them the best this academic year.

Using Competition Bells Outside of Sport

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008

Double KBs

The size and shape of competition bells do not change according to load so they provide great versatility for fundamental strength exercises (outside of kettlebell lifting). Notice the thinner handle; it’s similar to a barbell, but it allows for a great array of grip positions pictured above. 70 lb. dumbbells for example, typically have much thicker handles than the maroon bells Nick is holding. Even the handle on lighter dumbbells, like 15s, don’t have the same diameter as the pink bells Lena is holding. In essence, the competition bells provide a different stimulus in which to apply the traditional deadlift in addition to unilateral lifting.

Sport specific programming is often lumped into workouts that look like sport. However, when movement patterns provide a positive adaptational response, creativity can guide the program design. Purpose mixed with fun often creates the best recipe for success.

At 12 years old, our friend ‘Cona is the youngest coach within the AKC. He is one of the most technical kettlebell trainers in the country, especially when it comes to the rack position pictured here. As far as physical abilities are concerned, Cona can clean the 24s and snatch the 16s.

He weighs less than 100 pounds!

Congratulations to this most dedicated athlete!

Climbing Machu Picchu

“Here’s a picture of me in Machu Picchu recently, where I climbed the very steep Wynu Picchu, which I KNOW I would not have been able to do (especially at that altitude) without the physical preparedness of the Ice Chamber!”
