calvin

Calvin cannot back down from a challenge. He heard about Jill’s latest win and had to give the power wheel walk of death a try tonight.

The result: 100 yards

The reward: one free month of training

jillhurdle

The 2008 Olympic Games have brought a lot of attention to the sport of gymnastics again. We just had to feature a picture of Jill who, if you remember, was a multiple time NCAA and Pac-10 Champion. Not surprisingly, Jill’s winning attitude and supernatural strength never left her. She continues to be one of our top performers. Her latest challenge: beating Chris D. from Team 0700 on the power wheel walk of death…

Breaking News (7:45am, 8/14/08, AP)

Jill completed 108 yards this morning – after her workout!

Beat Da Dan

wheel walk

Dan Abs wheel-walked 54 yards non-stop on Saturday to set the benchmark. Although Jill beat Dan with 66.5 yards last night, she vowed to complete 100 yards before the end of the week. We anxiously await the results!

Side note: Jess Parker tried to beat Jill this morning but stopped short at 54 yards. Will anyone break 66.5 this week?

Steve and Alan will be presenting a clinic on Tactical Program Design at Mod Com this coming Saturday, 8/16, at 3pm. If you want to design your own conditioning programs, or if you aspire to train others, you need to know the “hows and whys” of strength & conditioning. This hands-on seminar will get you started. Topics include periodization and exercise paradoxes (specificity vs. variation, strength vs. endurance, etc.). Be ready to learn and work out.

Go Sam!

Sam Wood attends the IC nearly everyday. She is super dedicated and her hard work is paying off nicely. She is gaining lean body mass while losing body fat like many IC starlets here, but that “lil’ extra umph” Sam throws into her workouts puts her in a special category. Her willingness to learn new movements with good technique makes her any teacher’s dream come true!

Go Mallory

We will undoubtedly miss the valiant Ms. Mallory of 0700… She’s finally off to law school!

Since joining the IC in January of this year, Mallory has lost over 25 lbs. while making friends for life. Mallory is a straight shooter whose infectious positivity has encouraged countless team members to try new feats. She is also one of the original members of the ASPU Club and as a result earned her first jump pull-up this week. Don’t worry, Mallory promises to visit the IC in the coming months. Give thanks for Mallory! ;-)

Ride the Wave

“Today Rune and I went out to La Jolla shores with the paddle board (and Neo) – wow another great workout in the waves and small swell- no rest time, always balancing… Neo loves it! Annakari, who wouldn’t go in the surf without holding Rune’s hand last year, was out there by herself and surfing tandem with her godfather! What a difference a year makes. Each summer (well, last one and this one in particular) reminds me of my thankful heart for finding the IC.”

VF and Maya

Although elite kettlebell athletes are known for high reps and superior conditioning, some like Head Coach and World Champion Valery Fedorenko like to have fun with the bells too.

Check out this video of another world champion, Ivan Denisov kettlebell juggling.

Dynamic Warm-up Ideas

Dynamic Warm-up

“Many athletes such as gymnasts and martial artists [and kettlebellers] use ballistic stretches as a warm-up where movement through a full range of motion is necessary. Dynamic/ballistic warm-ups prepare the tendons, ligaments and the musculature around the major joints for external load bearing exercises. These sport-specific stretches and movements are effective in improving flexibility and mobility. Examples include leg swings, arm circles, trunk circles, back extensions and any type of stretch that includes bouncing, bobbing, or rhythmic motion.”

Reach Pullup

Spend some time each day fine tuning a skill, art, or sport you love. You may find that “practice” is a very different process than “training.” The pace is usually slower and patience is required, but the good news is that in practice, a greater level of self-discovery is made as you push through limits that once held you back.
