0900 Chamberettes with Ice Cubes
Pam Trish Kerri

“Hey Steve,

Kerri’s and my kids (the Bears) went head to head with Trish’s kids (the Bubbles) for the spring soccer league championship today and came in first (Bears) and second (Bubbles)!  Here’s a photo of the proud Ice Chamber mamas and their little ice cubes sporting their medals and some big grins!  We were so evenly matched the scores were 0-0 both times we played each other in the tournament this weekend, but the Bears came out 1 point ahead because of an extra goal scored in another game.  Big excitement!

Maya demos 20kg Snatch Lockout

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

I’ve been conversing with Coach Cate Imes recently about KB lifting in this country as it relates to the World Championships and ranking in general.  One topic that has arised is the importance of a good lockout during competition, especially for those that compete in the snatch.  Besides going too fast to stop on a dime, there is some evidence pointing to kinetic awareness as being a problematic factor for some lifters.  In other words, some lifters have not yet developed the sensory skills to distinguish the difference between a good lockout and a bad one.  That being said, I will list some common faults I’ve witnessed:

1) 11 o’clock stops

2) over rotation at 12 o’clock

3) using the stretch reflex (from the over rotation) to accelerate the drop without stopping at the top

4) elbows not fully extended during fixation phase overhead

I am raising these points because I know many of you are interested in competing.  It is pertinent that you recognize the technical qualities of a good lockout prior to progressing with pace or load.  Remember that a good lockout will ensure that you can move to the next level while minimizing injuries.

This video provides a good example of how to stop a relatively heavy weight overhead from the snatch.

Best,
Steven

WKC Cert 1

We had the pleasure today of teaching and certifying the first group of World Kettlebell Club Fitness Trainers on the West Coast.  It was great fun to work with peers in the profession.  Although our competition team is immersed into the sport of KB lifting, these coaches and trainers were here to learn Kettlebells as a wellness, fitness, and pre-habilitation program they could use to deliver to their clients.

Mario Gaytan, of the Working Body in Oakland, noted that after researching the gamut of Kettlebell certifications on the market, he decided that the WKC System was for him.  Similarly, Johnny Pirruccello, personal trainer from Woodland, CA felt that “technique based lifting” is the core component of kettlebell training that is missing from most gyms and training facilities today.  He jumped at the first opportunity to learn from the WKC.  Tina Jeffers, owner of Recreate Fitness in Portland, intends to come back to further enhance her education in kettlebell lifting.  Meanwhile, two other key organizations that participated today, Modern Combatives and Crunch Gym, have already begun instituting KB lifting as part of their group fitness class offerings.  These endorsements provide a small glimpse into the fast growing trend of the WKC system being delivered as a broad based performance program within the fitness industry.

Congratulations WKC Trainers.  We look forward to your success!

Best,

Steven
