Emily interviews Maya

"Take your mind off of the numbers and focus on the elegance of your execution." -Maya

Australia’s 1st Master of Sport, Emily Friedel interviews Maya about motherhood, double jerks for women, and the history of the ICKB Girls:

You are a mother, as is one of your team members, how have you guys achieved such a high level of lifting with so much else going on in your lives?

“…I think kettlebell fitness, as opposed to sport, is far more compatible with my lifestyle right now, but I got into the competitive aspect of this long before I knew what I was up against as a mother (our son was only 10 months old when we first started competing).  The only reason I didn’t give up after a series of disappointments and failed attempts on the platform is because Steve, Jess, Sara, and Surya wouldn’t let me…”

As part of Team USA, Mike and Annie always fight amongst the best in the world

Meanwhile Annie and Michael were down in El Salvador fighting in the 2010 Pan American Judo Championships.   Annie writes: “Mike and I didn’t have a good year this year at Pan Ams. Mike went 0-2 yesterday and I went 0-1 (I didn’t get pulled through to fight in the repechage).  However, I got the chance to redeem myself in the team competition going 3-0 helping win against Guatemala, Puerto Rico and Argentina.  I had to fight up a division (-52kg) because the team event only had certain weight classes and mine (-48kg) wasn’t picked. So I fought up and was able to redeem myself…”

We are extremely proud of all of our athletes. Win or lose, you guys represent the IC to the fullest.  Keep up the great work!

Ice Chamber Kettlebell Girls

Check out today’s EXAMINER.com article on KB Sport and the ICKB Girls!

“…If the sport conjures images of burly weight lifters grunting through a series of vein-popping sets, you’ll find none of that at Ice Chamber. The usual stereotypes fail to apply here. And if you hang around long enough, contrary themes about fitness, lifting weights, the sport of kettlebell and how all of this applies to women emerge…”
